Legal Status

Legal Status refers to the data relating to events in the lifetime of a patent. The legal status data can give you a good
indication of whether a patent is in force, has been abandoned, has expired or has changed ownership. These statuses are designated only for the Patents data within Search App and visually represented on the Profiles and List Views

Active: Green
Granted - Patent holder has been granted the right to restrict others from using the patent without the
necessary permissions.

License - Patent holder has extended to others the permission to use the patent
Reinstated - A expired patent has been reinstated if it has been granted a term extension or if any
overdue maintenance and late fees have been paid.


Inactive: Red
Abandoned - An application is considered abandoned if the applicant fails to respond to a prosecution
office action. A patent is abandoned if the holder fails to pay the requisite maintenance fees.

Ceased - The IP right has been lost because of a reason other than revocation, invalidation, nullity, or
cancellation.

Expired - The patent no longer carries any IP rights.

Expired Fee Related - The patent no longer carries any IP rights because maintenance fees have not
been paid.

Expired Lifetime - The patent no longer carries any IP rights because the patent has reached the end of
its term.

Revoked - IP rights associated with a patent have been lost because of either revocation, invalidation,
nullity, or cancellation.

Withdrawn - Applicant formally requests that the prosecution processing of an application be
discontinued preventing it from being issued. A patent may be withdrawn and reissued if holder
recognizes an error within the application (inaccuracies, problematic claims, reference issues, etc) that
could render the patent invalid.

Applications: Yellow
Pending - Indication that the application actively working through the prosecution process towards
grant
